Phi-4 is a 14B parameter, state-of-the-art open model built upon a blend of synthetic datasets, data from filtered public domain websites, and acquired academic books and Q&A datasets.

Phi-4 benchmark

The model underwent a rigorous enhancement and alignment process, incorporating both supervised fine-tuning and direct preference optimization to ensure precise instruction adherence and robust safety measures.

Context length: 16k tokens

Phi-4 performance eval by Microsoft

Primary use cases

The model is designed to accelerate research on language models, for use as a building block for generative AI powered features. It provides uses for general purpose AI systems and applications (primarily in English) which require:

  1. Memory/compute constrained environments.
  2. Latency bound scenarios.
  3. Reasoning and logic.

Out-of-scope use cases

The models are not specifically designed or evaluated for all downstream purposes, thus:

  1. Developers should consider common limitations of language models as they select use cases, and evaluate and mitigate for accuracy, safety, and fairness before using within a specific downstream use case, particularly for high-risk scenarios.
  2. Developers should be aware of and adhere to applicable laws or regulations (including privacy, trade compliance laws, etc.) that are relevant to their use case, including the model’s focus on English.
  3. Nothing contained in this readme should be interpreted as or deemed a restriction or modification to the license the model is released under.

Additional improvements to the Ollama Python library

The 0.4 release of the Ollama Python library includes additional improvements:

  • Examples have been updated on the Ollama Python GitHub.
  • Full typing support throughout the library to support direct object access while maintaining existing functionality.

Page Assist

### Key Features

1. **AI Model Integration:**

   - Enables users to connect their local AI models with web pages, allowing them to leverage AI directly from the browser.

2. **Sidebar and Web UI:**

   - Provides an interface within the browser where users can interact with their AI model.

   - The sidebar may include features for sending queries or prompts to the AI and displaying responses inline.

3. **Cross-Page Functionality:**

   - Offers consistent interaction capabilities across different web pages, making it easy to access AI assistance while browsing various sites.

4. **Customization Options:**

   - Users might have options to customize how the sidebar appears or configure specific settings for their local model.

   5. **Open Source:**

   - Being open-source allows developers to inspect the code, contribute improvements, and modify it to suit personal needs or integrate additional features.

### Use Cases

- **Research:** Researchers can use Page Assist to quickly test hypotheses or gather data using AI models while browsing relevant content online.

  - **Development:** Developers might utilize it for real-time assistance with coding challenges or debugging by integrating a language model that understands programming contexts.

- **Content Creation:** Writers and content creators could leverage the tool to brainstorm ideas, get writing suggestions, or proofread text as they research topics on the web.

### Potential Benefits

- **Enhanced Productivity:** By having AI assistance readily available across all web pages, users can work more efficiently.

  - **Privacy and Security:** Running models locally reduces data exposure compared to cloud-based solutions where data might be transmitted over the internet.

- **Customization:** Users have full control over their local model configurations, allowing for tailored interactions that suit specific needs or preferences.

### Considerations

- **Technical Requirements:** Users need a compatible AI model set up on their machine along with necessary computational resources.

  - **Learning Curve:** Depending on its complexity, users may need some time to familiarize themselves with the interface and configuration options.

Overall, Page Assist represents an innovative approach to integrating AI tools directly into everyday browsing activities, enhancing both productivity and accessibility for those who use or develop local AI models.
