On an as-yet unannounced date in 2010, Microsoft will officially release the fourth version of SharePoint.  Dubbed, appropriately enough, SharePoint 2010, the next version of SharePoint will be a major component of the Office 2010 release.  Here at Bamboo, we have developed and offered products for every version of SharePoint, dating back to SharePoint Team Services.  For those in whom "SharePoint Team Services" elicits  a reaction of curious puzzlement, you may wish to bone up on your SharePoint history by reading either Joel Oleson's 7 Years of SharePoint - a History Lesson, or the post, SharePoint History on Joining Dots.

 

But enough about SharePoint's past, for this area of Bamboo Nation is devoted to SharePoint's future.  As we excitedly await the public Beta of SharePoint Server 2010 which is speculated to occur around the SharePoint Conference 2009 to be held in Las Vegas in October, our current mission with this site is to sift through and collect the most relevant and valuable content amidst the growing deluge of SharePoint 2010-related information coming across the wire.  We invite you to join us in following "the road to SharePoint 2010" with our presentation of press coverage, as well as the best commentary from the blogging community.

What does it all mean?

Sites – they aren’t being referred to as portals anymore, (there goes my easy explanation of what SharePoint is). Sites are designed to share information securely and cover all mediums; intranets, internets, extranets and team sites. Checking in / out multiple documents is now a breeze!

Communities – empowering people to work together seamlessly in new ways, (think out of the box).

Content – management of content from its creation to its destruction and sharing it in ways to make it come alive.

Search – FAST had been integrated to make rich people search and data effortless. Previously ‘locked’ business data (line of business, transactional databases, etc), can now be searched as well. Getting results right the first time was the top focus.

Insights – allowing you to make better decisions faster and viewing data, people and systems effortlessly in order to make those decisions.

Composites – ‘rapid business solution development’, meaning you can build solutions with ease on top of SharePoint now. SharePoint Designer and Visual Studio integration is far less complicated.

Planning for SharePoint 2010 – Upgrade Planning Part 3 [ Posted on: 09-October-2009 ]

Please read first two posts in this series. Planning for SharePoint 2010 Part 1, Planning for SharePoint 2010 Part 2. In the last two posts I showed you how to move your data tier to your new 64bit Farm. That is you moved all your databases and tested that you now have a 64bit based database server to host all the content databases. Let’s look at how we can move the application server and the web front end server tiers. In this case you can choose to move both Tiers Tier B and C at the same time or individually. In either case the approach is the same. In order to move your Application Server(s) and the Web Front End Server(s) you’ll need to first install the SharePoint binaries on the servers on Farm B. With information you gathered in your audit you’ll need to do a fresh install of SharePoint on the SPAPP1 server.

Planning for SharePoint 2010 – Upgrade Planning Part 2 Moving the Databases [ Posted on: 25-September-2009 ]

Please read Part 1 of this post series before you continue. In this post I will highlight how to move your (32 bit) SQL Server tier to 64 bit. In the case of moving your data tier there are few prerequisites that you should consider. In this case we have the assumption that your new 64bit SQL server deployment has followed best practice guidelines for SQL server. From a SharePoint point of view you should consider the following to enable effective management of your existing content databases or any new databases you are creating.
