Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog : Planning for Upgrade from SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to SharePoint Server 2010

In order to upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010, you must first be running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 at SP2 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 at SP2, respectively. For customers running prior versions of SharePoint, including Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003, this means that you must first upgrade to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2 prior to upgrading to 2010 versions. Windows SharePoint Server 3.0 with SP2 is available as a free download, and trial versions of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 are available and supported for use in this upgrade/migration process:

How will Sharepoint 2007 Customization work under Sharepoint 2010 - Windows Live

Most of us got this question .. what will happen to the custom web parts and customization we developed for Sharepoint 2007 ? .. will it work under Sharepoint 2010 or we have to reinvest in modifying them, fortunately i got these information from Microsoft :)

Custom code written for the 2007 version of SharePoint will work on a 2010 installation without requiring the customizations to be re-written… see more on this blog :

Is Gradual Upgrade in SharePoint 2010 Really Dead? How is Upgrade Better? - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land

In the Upgrade to SharePoint 2007 there were 3 popular methods.  In Place, Gradual, and Database Attach.  In place was a scenario that many of us took as a no starter and many of us even went so far as to say NEVER do it.  Now the message is there are two methods for upgrade.  In place and Database attach.  Despite the fact that gradual upgrade as we knew it is dead, what we got from gradual upgrade we still have.  What do I mean?

Planning for SharePoint 2010 – Upgrade Planning Part 3 [ Posted on: 09-October-2009 ]

Please read first two posts in this series. Planning for SharePoint 2010 Part 1, Planning for SharePoint 2010 Part 2. In the last two posts I showed you how to move your data tier to your new 64bit Farm. That is you moved all your databases and tested that you now have a 64bit based database server to host all the content databases. Let’s look at how we can move the application server and the web front end server tiers. In this case you can choose to move both Tiers Tier B and C at the same time or individually. In either case the approach is the same. In order to move your Application Server(s) and the Web Front End Server(s) you’ll need to first install the SharePoint binaries on the servers on Farm B. With information you gathered in your audit you’ll need to do a fresh install of SharePoint on the SPAPP1 server.

Planning for SharePoint 2010 – Upgrade Planning Part 2 Moving the Databases [ Posted on: 25-September-2009 ]

Please read Part 1 of this post series before you continue. In this post I will highlight how to move your (32 bit) SQL Server tier to 64 bit. In the case of moving your data tier there are few prerequisites that you should consider. In this case we have the assumption that your new 64bit SQL server deployment has followed best practice guidelines for SQL server. From a SharePoint point of view you should consider the following to enable effective management of your existing content databases or any new databases you are creating. SQL Server 2008 or 2005 (64bit) are both supported when moving to SP2010. Details about preparing your database server can be found here (TechNet). This may be a good time to also plan what your SQL maintenance regime would look like for your new data tier. Start with Database maintenance guidance for

Planning for SharePoint 2010 - Upgrade Planning and Guidance OFC306 TechED NZ Session Notes [ Posted on: 18-September-2009 ]

Here is a detailed outline of what I discussed and presented at my TechEd session on Wednesday 16th September in Auckland – New Zealand titled Planning for SharePoint 2010 - Upgrade Planning and Guidance OFC306. Thanks to all of you who came along to the session. This is a first in a series of posts and White Papers that I will publish as part of an ongoing series on planning to upgrade to SharePoint Server 2010. Needless to say that I will only cover planning aspects and will NOT be talking about any new features or functionality of SharePoint 2010. Please visit the SharePoint team blog for details of SharePoint 2010. System Requirements for SharePoint 2010 This has been common knowledge for a while and the SharePoint product team announced that SharePoint 2010 will only be available in x64 (64bit) versions. Therefore the first step ...

Make SharePoint 2007 Act Like SharePoint 2010

Today I’m releasing a new and improved version of the script, based on your feedback. Here are the changes:

Column names can have a display name and an internal name

In the previous version of the script you’d had to specify the names of the columns you’d like to ajaxify based on the internal name (which escapes spaces etc). In the new version of the script you can specify the display name as well. For example
