I’m finding tonnes of new stuff in Office 2010,
What’s Up? NDA or NOT? Office 2010 Technical Preview vs. SharePoint 2010 Technical Beta - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land
The Office marketing folks have shared the bits very broadly and NDA is over, the SharePoint marketing folks are more than ever managing the disclosure of information of SharePoint Server and would prefer people to view the sneak peak videos for the latest information and plan to attend the SharePoint Conference in Vegas in October. “This year’s conference will be looking towards the future with a broad array of deep content centered on the next version of SharePoint, SharePoint 2010”
I do agree with Joe…

Visio 2010 Technical Preview Released
This week Microsoft announced that Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, Microsoft Project 2010 and Microsoft Visio 2010 have reached the technical preview engineering milestone. A limited number of invited participants can now download Visio 2010 to try it for themselves. This milestone also kicks off our coverage of Visio 2010 on the Visio Insights blog!
Visio 2010 Overview
Visio 2010 focuses on three major areas of investment:
Ease of Use
Visio 2010 incorporates the Office Fluent User Interface and design philosophy. The improved organization and presentation of Visio’s capabilities helps you complete tasks and create better looking diagrams with greater efficiency. The Shapes Window gets a new look and new capabilities to make organizing shapes and adding them to the drawing even easier. Within the drawing window we added productivity improvements like shape insertion and automatic alignment & spacing to speed up initial diagram creation AND assist with editing and maintaining diagrams over time.

693 PowerShell cmdlets in SharePoint 2010 « Dmitry’s PowerBlog: PowerShell and beyond
SharePoint has for a long time been a notable absentee at the PowerShell party – but the wait is now almost over. Technical Preview of the product shared by Microsoft just a few days ago has
693some number (see my update at the bottom of the post) PowerShell cmdlets – which should (by sheer number) cover all the tasks administrators should ever want to accomplish. Stsadm and psconfig are still in the build (for backwards compatibility ) but I bet PowerShell will just take SharePoint administration by storm now.Valÿ Greavu has published this information along with a few other SharePoint 2010 tidbits and screenshots on his Romanian blog (here’s a Google Translate version).
Valÿ does not provide details or examples on the cmdlets, however, I could track some in the “Customizing the Ribbon in Windows® SharePoint® Services

Office Client Developer Content and Resources : New features in Outlook 2010!
You can customize these areas using Ribbon extensibility, and supply Ribbon XML to the GetCustomUI method of the IRibbonExtensibility interface. Use the Ribbon ID for the feature to determine the XML to pass as a returned value in the GetCustomUI method. Your Ribbon XML typically supplies callbacks that let you respond to a button click, or control visibility or the icon of your Ribbon controls. Use the IRibbonControl.Context object to identify the active window containing the user interface that triggers the callback procedure.
Documentation for the Solutions module and customizing Outlook user interface is currently available to participants of the Technical Preview program. Most developer documentation for Outlook 2010 new features will be available to the public before the launch of Office 2010. I will keep you all posted about further documentation availability.

When working in a client/server environment, it is imperative that you limit the number of rows that the user brings over the network wire. It is therefore necessary that you supply a criteria form that allows the user to specify the rows that they want to return. The problem is that the user often designates criteria that is way too broad. In that situation, you must determine that there is a problem, and require the user to create criteria that returns less rows. An example is the form shown below.

Microsoft Office Web Applications: Your Burning Questions Answered | Sarah In Tampa | Channel 10
Since the announcement of the upcoming Microsoft Office Web Applications at this year’s PDC, there has been a lot of excitement about this new service which will allow for creating, editing, collaborating, and sharing documents using the web. However, as I’ve followed the blog posts about this topic, I’ve also come across quite a bit of misinformation about the web apps, too. In an attempt to dispel some of the rumors out there, I’ve created this special Q&A which will hopefully answer some of your burning questions about the new web applications.
Q&A
Q: Do the Office Web Applications require Internet Explorer?
A: No! Office Web applications will work across multiple platforms and browsers including Safari and Firefox, too.

Microsoft Excel
Thanks to Sam Radakovitz, a Program Manager on the Excel team, for putting together this series on Sparklines.
For Excel 2010 we’ve implemented sparklines, “intense, simple, word-sized graphics”, as their inventor Edward Tufte describes them in his book Beautiful Evidence. Sparklines help bring meaning and context to numbers being reported and, unlike a chart, are meant to be embedded into what they are describing:
